About · Operating principles

Five principles behind every decision.

They guide how AAM selects patients, spends money, chooses partners and decides when to grow.

01

Patients first

Every operational decision must serve the patient’s medical interests and dignity.

In practice

  • Patient files are confidential and handled according to data-protection requirements.
  • Patient stories are shared only with informed consent and appropriate privacy safeguards.
  • AAM never exploits patient suffering for fundraising or publicity.
  • Applicants are told what to expect: the process, the documents, and possible timelines.
02

Medical integrity

Treatment decisions remain grounded in independent professional expertise and medical evidence. AAM prioritizes scientifically supported interventions and clearly distinguishes established treatments from experimental ones.

In practice

  • AAM does not independently diagnose patients or prescribe treatments.
  • Qualified, independent medical professionals review every application.
  • Experimental treatments require additional medical, ethical and regulatory scrutiny.
  • Donor, commercial and financial interests cannot influence medical decisions.
03

Equitable access

Financial and geographic circumstances must not become unjustified barriers to assistance.

In practice

  • No nationality-based or income-group-based restrictions.
  • Financial need is assessed individually, not through income alone.
  • The complexity of organizing a treatment never, by itself, makes a patient less deserving.
  • Any temporary operational restriction in a territory must not become a discriminatory judgment about its population.
04

Institutional collaboration

Sustainable access requires cooperation with existing healthcare systems.

In practice

  • AAM works alongside hospitals, physicians, research centers, funders and local organizations.
  • It does not replace healthcare systems — it connects patients to capabilities that already exist.
  • Payments go, whenever possible, directly to verified medical institutions.
  • Co-financing with other charitable organizations is encouraged.
05

Responsible growth

International expansion must follow demonstrated impact, financial sustainability and operational readiness.

In practice

  • Growth happens in phases, from foundation to a global network.
  • Each phase must demonstrate measurable results before the next begins.
  • Impact and financial reports are published.
  • AAM preserves its core specialization in complex, specialized and advanced care.
Cross-cutting

Four commitments that apply everywhere

They apply across all three pillars and all four medical domains.

Research & evidence

AAM follows medical developments, evaluates the evidence and identifies unmet medical needs.

Patient advocacy

AAM raises awareness of inequalities in medical access and supports patients’ interests and dignity.

Medical independence

Medical decisions remain independent from financial, commercial and donor interests.

Transparency & equity

Eligibility decisions, financial allocations and activities are documented and governed by transparent policies.

Principles only matter if they’re enforced
